In the early 1960's, guitar players discovered that if they continued to increase the volume on their amplifiers, there was point at which the output drive tubes could no longer push any more power through, and the amplification would begin to 'clip' the output. This would effectively "distort" the signal.

A few underground rif-rafs and renegades thought this 'distorted' sound was actually "cool", and began to strive to make their amplifiers distort intentionally. By the late 1960's guitar amplifier makers began putting separate volume and drive controls on the 'pre-amp' stage of their amplifiers. Soon after, effects pedals would become widely available, promising sounds of Fuzz, Distortion and the legendary Overdrive.

Time would pass, and the popularity of these distorted effects continued to grow. Bands like ACDC, Black Sabbath and Metallica, with their distorted sounds would begin to displace the glam-rock of the 80's. Great battles would be fought, Jesus himself would even build a Hot Rod to state his side in this mighty war.
